介绍:The Payne Foundation was formed to continue the work of well-known horticulturist Theodore Payne upon his retirement from the nursery business. He had introduced over 400 species of California native plants into the trade and was operating the only exclusively CA native plant nursery in southern California at the time.
The Payne Foundation now operates a 22-acre nursery and demonstration garden in the Sun Valley community of Los Angeles. We offer classes on garden design, horticulture, plant-animal interactions, ecology, art, and ethnobotany. We also offer special programs for elementary school children that are designed to meet the science requirements of the State educational curriculum.
The nursery propagates hundreds of species and cultivars of California native plants, selections that are not commonly available in the nursery trade, in an effort to support the development of biodiversity in our local landscapes, to encourage bird and pollinator populations, and to support environmental initiatives such as water conservation, water quality, and the reduction of reliance of pesticides and herbicides. Plants are available for purchase by the public at our nursery and at local farmer's markets. Further, we manage a wild seed collection program to gather and offer seeds from wild areas, in compliance with all laws, permits, and policies on this subject matter, to ensure greater biological diversity in our plant material.
Other Foundation programs include an annual garden tour featuring over 30 gardens in the Los Angeles region that display CA native plants; the wild flower hotline which provides notice, seasonally, on the best places to view wild flowers; an art gallery that exhibits botanical and landscape art of the CA flora and ecology; a small library containing relevant botanical and gardening subjects; and the archives of Theodore Payne.
